Chapter 3.17- Half Answer

“The Sun upright-Oops. No. It’s only upright to me. Okay. The Sun reversed in this position-”6 weeks of studying the tarot through the classes Appaloosa Plains Spiritualist Institute offered were nearly at an end. Approaching the lessons in much the same manner she’d approached high school projects had taken Mariah far. Even if she failed this test spectacularly she should still receive a passing grade.

“The Hanged Man before an Outcome of The Ten Of Swords suggests the querent realizes they need to let go, but are frightened that by doing so it could spell the end-”
This would be a lot easier if Christie would stop drumming the table top with her fiery fake fingernails. Clickclickclickclickclick. Over and Over. Mariah entertained a brief vision of pulling them out of their sockets with pliers while taking a deep breath between cards. It also would have been much easier had Christie allowed Mariah to lay the cards out. Christie had shuffled them. Christie had dealt them. And when she laid them out she’d laid them out so they were upright to her and upside down to Mariah.

“However, after every ending is a new beginning. The beginning suggested by the Ace of Wands, clearly a pregnancy, could mean that by letting go of their fears regarding becoming a parent, the querent will gain a sunrise brighter and more vibrant than the sunset they are currently witnessing.”
Christie said nothing at Mariah’s conclusion.

And continued to say nothing for far

            far

            far

            too long.

“Mediocre. Though you passed the exam, you lack depth and clarity. Your reading was flat and uninspired.” Christie deigned to speak at last.
“But it was correct. As I understand it, The Institute, by my Abuella’s instructions, really only uses Tarot to supplement readings. If my reading lacks depth and clarity, my sight will make up for it.”

“Your grandmother mentioned nothing, not one word, about you having a gift of sight.” Christie had taken to drumming her fingers on the desk again.
“Abuella wouldn’t have confided in anyone like you.” Mariah snorted back.
“Ha!” It was Christie’s turn for derision. Her nostrils flared, malice glittered in her eyes, her cheeks quivering with her finally exposed anger. “As if she needed to ‘confide’ in anyone! It’s all in her papers and diaries written for anyone with eyes to see. Not one of her prophecies says you have any abilities at all. As far as I can tell, you’ve nothing more than a head for business and a lucky hunch. But you’ll be exposed one day. Not just as a fraud of a psychic but each and every one of your sins will be in a spotlight seen across all of SimNation. Delphine and her flatterers might choose to interpret the entry differently, but I have no need for such rudiments. I know because I have Seen it!”
There it was. Christie’s jibe had found its target. Mariah could feel the blood drain from her face, but was careful to keep her incredulous expression in place. Still, Christie seemed to know her work was nearly done. In an instant she had transformed back into her usual unperturbed self, sinking deep into her seat.
“You should ask Ruben about Sabria’s papers, find the entry regarding yourself,” she said as carelessly, low and quietly as ever. “It’s all in the library. After that, you have the rest of this week off. When you return, you’ll report to me for your 8 weeks as an apprentice before Delphine will allow you clients of your own. Congrats, Mariah. I’m your mentor.”

“I’m sorry,” Ruben, the librarian for The Institute’s modest collection of books, repeated. “But I’m not supposed to give students access to Mrs.Guerra’s archives without a note from their teacher or mentor.”
Still frustrated that there were now two people in her world who could see straight through her, Mariah wasn’t about to back down. This poor kid was about to feel her wrath.
“Listen, I am not just a student asking out of curiosity, or with intent to make them public, or who wants to destroy them,” Mariah’s teeth were barred and Ruben had taken several steps away from her. “There are papers in there directly related to me. Me! And I want to see them! Now!”

“I’m sorry-” he dared to say again, rolling his eyes.
“-Fine. You want to play that way? I own this library. Own it. It’s mine. And because of that, I own those papers. They’re mine. Want to get nit-picky? I own you! Want to keep your job? Bring.Me.Her.Papers!”
Ruben stared slack jawed, eyes round with wonder. He’d finally woken up enough to stop apologizing, though not enough to move.
“NOW!” Mariah barked making him gasp before scurrying off. Mariah snorted before following him, taking the box he finally produced to a desk to examine it’s contents.

It took her several minutes to figure out just what a large task she had in front of her. The box contained about 10 volumes filled with the familiar cramped and elegant hand of her grandmother. The books were organized almost like diaries, with entries of visions and prophecies dated chronologically. She’d have loved to ask Ruben for guidance whenever he’d come near to dust or pretend to straighten the books, but he glared at her each time she met his eye and she figured she might not have made a friend of him.
The sun was low in the windows before she finally found what she was looking for.
“Of the second generation, born of great love, a daughter will arise. Dark and suspicious, her passions will be applied to my greatest work. Her efforts and skill will make the center rise as the morning sun. Notoriety will ensure her work lasts.” There followed a date, the day she’d walked in to find Delphine waiting on her then the words “Before Lunch.” Mariah Renee Sixkiller had been written in another hand, slipped into the margins beside the too short entry.

Mariah quickly read the next few pages looking for more. However, Christie had used the word ‘entry.’ Single not plural. Perhaps this half answer really was all there was to it.
This brief note made by that old witch had caused such a stir within the walls of The Institute? The idea made Mariah roll her eyes. The thought that this small passage had made such an impact on her own life, however, wasn’t so easy to put aside.
Psychics, Seers, Mediums? They were all the same; Con Artists out to make a quick buck. Every one who’d put any stock into her grandmothers words was a fool. But the biggest fool of them all was Mariah. After all, she’d played right into it.

Dove and Vivia’s giggling made her smile. The girls were having a fantastic time tearing her jewelry box apart in search of accessories for their Spooky Day costumes.
“I know sweetie,” she tried to soothe Ceeven. “Just hold very still and try not to squint so I can get it.”
Tiger Ceeven had an eyelash threatening to undo her careful make up job.
            “I’ll try, Mama.”
“Tha’s it! I need it.” Vivia exclaimed. “Oooh, where’s the other one?”
“Sorry, Mama.” Ceeven murmured gently. He’d jumped at his sister’s outburst making her finger rub under his eye.
“It’s okay. It didn’t smudge too bad. I’ll be able to fix it in a jiffy.”
“Have you seen other one for this?” Dove chimed in.
“I dunno. Nooo, I don’ think so. It’s pretty though. Ask Mom.”
            “Nah, I’ll look again.”
Curiosity finally got the best of Mariah. “What are you two scavengers looking for?” she asked as she put the finishing touch on Ceeven’s stripes.

“This,” Vivia turned, presenting a white glove to her mom.
Mariah wanted to laugh. “What do you need my white gloves for?”
“Duh, Rabbits has paws that match their fur! See my boots?” Vivia held a leg out, wiggling her footwear to make sure her mom wouldn’t miss them.
“Ah! I see. Well, if the other glove isn’t in there, I’m not sure where it might be,” she answered, slightly concerned. “Dove? What is it you’re looking for?”
            “Earring.”
“Could I see which one? I didn’t know I had one missing.”

Dove joined Vivia in presenting her one sided find.
Mariah blinked, frowning at the earring Dove presented. A teardrop shaped sapphire winked up from Dove’s hand. The set it belonged to had been in the family for several generations. If one of the earrings were missing Mariah would be super upset.
“Oh. Well, I could look and see if they’re hiding in my jewelry box, or I could finish getting Dove’s hair fixed and we could start Trick or Treating.”
Vivia and Dove stopped pouting immediately, both girls eager to beg for candy.

The obligatory costume pic was hurriedly taken before the kids could begin their squabbling over where to start begging for candy in earnest. Delphine’s family had just adopted a new pony and the girls wanted to go there first to meet it. Ceeven was afraid of horses and would rather go to Taylor’s house first. Taylor might not be Roger’s partner any longer, but she kept up with the kids when she could and took an especial interest in Ceeven.
Despite this, Mariah still couldn’t shake the feeling that Taylor disapproved of her. It was something she’d sensed long before he’d broken up with her and she was still baffled by it.

Electing to go to Delphine’s first was the easy part. Ceeven clutched her skirts, turning around completely when the pony roamed too close to him. From out of nowhere he pulled out his still contentious doll, Poppet, hugging it tightly. At least she’d managed to talk him out of wearing his scarf with his costume. Though it had taken two weeks of begging to get him to agree it could stand to be washed.
When Delphine finally appeared, Mariah had to hide her laughter. She was so used to seeing her in pantsuits and makeup that this casual version of Delphine was odd.

Mariah had tried to give a friendly smile and wave when Taylor appeared at her door several streets and dozens of houses later. Taylor didn’t return the wave and looked at her so strangely she was finally forced to drop her hand without receiving any other acknowledgment. Maybe next year she could talk Roger into taking the night off to take the kids Trick of Treating for a change. At least they’d be able to finish soon. Taylor had loaded the kids buckets with handfuls of candy a piece.

The kids had long been in bed. Despite her tucking them in, she was almost positive at least two of them were up munching on the mountain of sweets they’d just gained. Besides, the doorbell had only stopped its incessant ringing about 30 minutes ago. Mariah had turned tv on only for the noise. Her mind was too far afield to digest the romantic comedy she’d found. She really did need to contact Roger not only to see if he could Trick or Treat with the kids next year, but because it had been a couple of months since they’d heard from him and Ceeven had begun to fret over his absence.
The doorbell chiming once again interrupted her thinking. Her porch light was off. It was after 10 pm! Who did these… Roger???

She was so stunned she had no words as she opened the door.
“Can I come in?” He asked brusquely.
            “Sure, yeah.”
He stepped in and stood with his arms folded. The serious look on his face was so familiar to Mariah it almost felt like home. Almost. His eyes held none of his old warmth.
            “The kids are in bed-”
“-I’m not here to see the kids.”
“Oh,” a little thrill raced up her spine making goosebumps erupt on her arms. Did he mean… “They’ll be disappointed they missed seeing you.”
            “I can see them tomorrow.”
“Oh! Wow! That’s great you’ve managed to get several days off in a row so soon after that camping… trip.” A lead balloon brought Mariah back to earth.
“I don’t have ‘days off.’ I’m off the case, Mariah. I’m home,” he answered, a sharp bite in his words.
She had no answer for such a sudden pronouncement. What happened? Had Tex been arrested? Was it all over?
“And I’m not here to tell you that.”
            “Oh?”
            “Where’s Andre?”

Dundundunnn!!! Lol.
(Personal stuffs incoming: Skip if you’d like.)
That was a long delay between this and the last, my apologies. My excuse this time is a lot larger and more complex. Hubs had quite a health scare right around my birthday and thought he could ignore things. Turns out he couldn’t. (Of course. Silly men.) So we’ve had to overhaul our lifestyle which took a lot of time and effort. It was also really hard because his family is so far from supportive over it that they’re basically ignoring him. (Embarrassed. Seriously. I kind of hate them all right now.) Anyhow, they’re ass-y-ness has slowed things down considerably. But I think I’ve finally managed to drag hubs out of it enough that when we go to their reunion next month we can rub their faces in it pretty thoroughly. And! It means things finally settled enough that I could take a peek at Mariah and co. again. (End personal stuffs.)
There are some outtakes and trivia bits up on the bloopers blog (click the tab above, or HERE!) if you're curious.
As for the above, please ignore Dove’s magic hair changes. Lol. Aaaand ignore the upside down tarot cards Mariah read. That was just an “I’m shooting this Naow!” mistake. Ha!

  1. Hope that everything is well with your husband. And family- shittines is the worst. Crossing my fingers that you both get the face- rubbing vengenance you deserve.

So Mariah is now the pupil of someone that doesn't like her? Now I'm wondering if Abuella really was just a master scammer, writing all the diary things, because she thought Mariah could save the institutes finances and reputation. If she even was talking about her that was. Who was it that had written Mariahs name next to the entry?

Did Taylor know that Roger was home, since she stared at Mariah like that? What has gotten into him though? He doesn't have to act like a thug, just because he looks like one. That was a lot of questions.

    1. He's doing much much better now, thank you! I think we will enjoy it a little too much. Ha! >:D

Yup! but! Christie is just as concerned by the future of the Institute, so it could be a good thing. But LOL! Was Sabria just scamming? Did she even intend for her diaries to be used in that way? Way back when she was very adamant to Layla that the future is never set. Nothing is concrete. Wouldn't such books show that maybe she didn't fully believe that herself? And notice, Mariah had to threaten to fire Ruben to get ahold of them. Is it possible all of those predictions haven't come true? ;) Sorry! It's a lot to think about and I'm working on ironing a lot of that out right now. Haha. Delphine had written in Mariah's name next to the entry.

Ah! We shall see next time! xD On both of those, actually. You're right, Roger has no right to march into Mariah's house only to be rude to her. And there's lots more questions coming up.

  2. Who stole my 'next post' button?! *tramps around like the Wicked Witch of the West* Was it you?!

SO! Ol' Rog thinks that Mariah really IS seeing Andre! Uh... NO, dickweed.
Or... Is Mariah in danger? Why is Rog off the case? Is Andre stalking her? Does Andre think he can just waltz back into Mariah's life because obviously she's been waiting for him since she isn't married and all, right? /seething at both men
Why was Rog so biting? I really do wanna rip out his piercings. With my teeth.

I'm sorry all that crap happened. :( Have 'fun' rubbing it in their faces.

    1. LOL! It was MEEE!!! But the first third of the next chapter is finished, and the second scene should go just as quickly. The third though? That might take a little bit. But it's in the works at least. So that's something? lol

Yes! Yes, he does really believe that she's seeing Andre secretly. The answers to the first three questions will be next time. As for the next statement? That's to be seen further down the road.
He thinks he had good reason for acting like that. Thinks. He'll get a chance to say it himself next chapter. Lol! You might be able to scare Mr.Tough Cop with that!

I'm sorry too. It wasn't fun. But! We absolutely will have fun rubbing it in all of their faces. With salt I hope. *grumbles and mumbles about in-laws. lol

  3. Okay, okay, okay. Go with me here: Remember when Mariah was all dressed up, was that because she was meeting Andre? I feel like it was, and Roger's suspicion could be built on the fact that he knows this? Obviously, first of all, he would go to his family and all that (like I mean older family, I know Andre does have family at Mariah's house but he thinks that family isn't there I'm getting off topic I'm going to end this tangent at the bracket), and why would he even think Andre's at Mariah's? He thought that Mariah rejected his proposal for Andre, yes, but that isn't enough to burst into her house like that, is it?
    Maybe I'm over-thinking this...
(also I would like to take a moment to appreciate the fact that Roger can actually stand up to 'Riah now)

Poor Mariah, it sucks having teachers that hate you (not that I know; I'm the perfect student ;))but I can't help but wonder whether Mariah will be able to keep up the business or not. I can see her doing really well and then one day everything collapsing beneath her feet.

I hope Mr Sunny is okay now! It's crappy that your in laws were so unsupportive, but give them an extra middle finger from me when you next see them :D

    1. Oooo! Interesting theory! But Andre also has parents and a sister in town. Wouldn't he go to them first? Especially since he doesn't know Dove exists and ended his acquaintance with Mariah so difinitively? I'm not sure Roger thinks Andre would be at Mariah's, but more that Mariah probably keeps up with Andre's whereabouts. However, I can let him tell you all exactly what he was thinking next chapter. Overthink nothing. =D We've started down the rabbit hole and eventually, everything will connect.

I can totally see you as the perfect student! Apples in hand for teacher each day with beautifully polished homework ready to turn in. ;) Mariah's ability to fake it as a kid was one thing. She's playing with the big boys now and we've all seen what happens when those fake psychics are exposed as frauds in real life. She's going to have to be very good very fast. But perhaps having someone with real talents will help her polish her A game?

Mr.Sunny is doing loads better now! Thanks for asking! And Will!Do! Though I might not have enough hands... Think a middle toe means the same thing? ;) Aw, screw that. I'll just never put those fingers down. Ha!

  4. Oh! Too short! :P I need to know what happens!

Mariah can't seem to catch a break. I hope Christie isn't right. That blurb about notoriety lasting.

The kids were adorable in their halloween outfits! But why would the glove & earring be missing? Now I'm worried that someone is stealing things to make a little voodoo!

I was so happy to see Roger come by to see her, but was disappointed with his abruptness. Where IS Andre? What the heck!

I'm sorry to hear about the health scare, but glad that it sounds like you guys were able to get it taken care of so quickly! I can't even imagine in what world the in-laws wouldn't be supportive if it leads to being better. Wish you guys the best!

    1. I felt bad leaving it there this time! Really bad. But parts of the next one are already shot and written and I have an entire week kid free to work on the other bits, so hopefully we'll get to see what's up soon!

Things have to get worse before it can get better. She'll catch a break sooner or later. She has to, right? Mmmm. Yeah, that was an interesting word wasn't it? xD

We'll let Roger explain his attitude next chapter. He's got a lot to answer for. Not just for how he treated Mariah there, but for not telling her everything about that camping trip.

My inlaws felt the world was just being mean and picking on hubs. Really. But instead of sticking up for him, they got angry with him for then allowing something to happen that would make others pick on him more. And then he went and did it again! Shame on him! Stuff like that only happens to others! Oooo, I'm getting hot all over again just thinking about it. Sheesh. Bah. We're moving on and things are so SO much better! Thanks!

  5. So Christie is having Ruben's affair baby (I read the bloopers post)? Maybe Christie will not be around for too long if she has the baby. I wouldn't want to work with Ruben and Delphine after that.

At least Mariah tried to be nice to Taylor. So she and Roger were a couple? I just don't remember her lol.

Roger's back?!! And he's mad...when he really has no right to be. He's angry because he thinks Mariah is seeing Andre; well so what?! She can date anyone she wants, he has no hold on her. And if he's mad because she didn't tell him, well he never told Mariah that Kelly would be going on the camping trip with the kids. I'm just annoyed with him right now. But Carrie has an interesting theory about Andre being the reason she was all dressed up that night.

    1. I think she was actually preggers last time I saved, yes. lol. As to what will happen with the Delphine v Christie v Ruben triangle... It will certainly change some of the dynamics at work there. And Mariah's usually pretty resourceful. Perhaps she'll find a way to turn it to her favor. ;)

Mariah does try. She has no reason to dislike her, and she adores that Taylor takes an interest in the kids. Taylor was Roger's first partner when he joined the Police Force. Her only other appearance in Sixkillers is here: https://secretsofthesixkillers.blogspot.com/2014/04/chapter-32-how-to-ask-nicely.html . It's been a long time since that was posted! They weren't a couple in the romantic sense though, as she's a lesbian.

Roger is back and he's angry. It's not so much that he's angry about her possibly seeing Andre as... well, he'll get to explain it next chapter. Still, you're quite right. He's got a lot of balls going in like that after the camping trip. Will it help if I tell you that Mariah hasn't forgotten that either? ;) I like Carrie's theory! We'll find out why she was dressed up that night before it's all over though. =D

  6. I'm sorry about the trouble you've been having, but glad to hear your husband is doing better now. I wish you well with the face-rubbing! ;)

Also sorry I got here so late, sims hasn't really been on my mind much the last two weeks. But! Now I'm finally here.

I'm confused! Christie obviously doesn't like Mariah (because Christie is the real deal and Mariah isn't, presumably), but couldn't she choose whatever mentor she prefers if it all belongs to her anyway? If she's to be a fake tarot reader she'd have more benefit from a con tutor anyway, wouldn't she? The institute sees her as a future cash cow because of her heritage, so she's obviously useful to them. But I guess there's a reason for everything. Patience!

What's the deal with the missing glove and earring? DUN dun dun, can't be just a coincidence can it? Also still wondering about Poppy! Who was she? Where did she go? Is she stealing gloves and earrings now? The kids were so cute in their outfits, and Vivia holding the glove, adorable! You stage your scenes so well, even the little things like that.

I don't remember Taylor, so I had to look her up. She was in that boxing scene two years ago, right? I'm going to cut myself some slack for not remembering. ;) I can understand why she wouldn't exactly like Mariah back then, but now? There must be more to it than Roger's broken heart.

WHAT NOW, Roger? Andre hasn't been around for ages, and what if he was? It's none of his business anymore. Boundaries!

    1. Thank you! I think the face rubbing is going to be incredibly pleasant. Ha!

Mariah is trying to play by the rules to win popularity points. (It's been so long!) She uses gossip and observation to make her 'predictions.' So the friendlier she is with others, the more information she can glean without being noticed. However! You very nearly hit on what's going on there. You're so close! But you're right. Everything will be explained in the proper place. ;)

Ooo! What *is* with the missing glove and earring??? =D Mmm, Poppy. We'll just have to see if she's stealing things around the house for fun. Or maybe it's retaliation since none of them believe she exists??? DUN dun dun! lol. Thank you! My daughter did that with a glove this winter, so she's the inspiration with the face and all. It was so cute!

Oh, absolutely. Cut yourself some slack for not remembering her. It's been a LONG time since we've seen her or had interaction with her. Good for you for looking her up! Kudos and a cookie for you! Ooo! I bet you're right that there's got to be more to it. We'll find out next chapter. ;)

Yeah, he's really not doing himself any favors with that entrance. He thinks it's justified (which he will explain next chapter) but it isn't excusable. Thankfully, Mariah doesn't think so either.

  7. I didn't know the tarot card were upside down because I don't have that amount of brain ;) Doves hair didn't bother me, but Viv was inside Taylors door, no wonder Taylor looked so weirdly at Mariah! Like "Uh, excuse me? Control your offspring!"
But seriously, what was that look? It doesn't take much to wave, Taylor, Jeeeez! Now I see why Kaity acted out so much... ;)

But I'm glad Mariah got to spend time with the kids, but poor Ceeven is such a baby <3. Love how the girls were like 'F the odd pairs, CANDIESSS!", kids, eh? But Mariah seemed pretty unbothered by the missing family heirloom earring, is she just tired or did she hide it so the kids arent tempted to play with them and lose them for real? And who owns white gloves anymore? (I'm imagining silky ones, not wooly ones)

Yay for passing her test, but that Christie doesn't seem to like her all too much... And this thing shes seen about her seems ominous, Me no like. :'(

But yay! Hot Roger is back! But he seems pretty angry! Why does he want to know where Andre is? That ship has long sailed, pal...

...But then again, this is SECRETS of the Sixkillers......

As for personal, y'no, we've talked.
But for everyone else reading, y'all should be so proud of Sunny and Shakespeare, changing habits and lifestyle is HAAARD and they're doing amazing <3 :) xxxxx
Thanks for posting, and telling me 6 weeks later ;) JK ILY xx

    1. Actually, both Vivia and Ceeven went all the way into her house! lol I was like, "Where are you guys going?!?" Then they walked back out through the closed door. xD Generation 4 is already trying to mess with my head. IKR? However, I set up this save just for this chapter so Taylor and Mariah don't know each other like they do for realzies. So... That could totally be it.

He's a real scaredy cat for sure. I actually chose the Tiger costume for him because he reminds me so much of Daniel Tiger from Mr.Roger's Neighborhood. (http://www.neighborhoodarchive.com/mrn/characters/daniel_striped_tiger/ for the tldr: He's a meek scaredy tame tiger. )

Lol! Yup. That's exactly how kids can be when it comes to begging for candy. Mine at least. Ha! Ah, Mariah figured the earring has to be somewhere in the house and she's pretty good at being a thorough cleaner so she hopes to find it soon. Lol, those gloves. They're actually supposed to be leather driving gloves for winter wear. She has white instead of black because it matches her outerwear. (Wow, do I overthink this. o_o)

Oh, no. Christie absolutely doesn't like her. But we'll let Christie tell it her way later on. ;)

Yeah, but Hot Roger is still feeling very hurt by Mariah over his own imaginings. But since he's back, he ought to be able to figure that out pretty quickly. I hope. ;)

      YES! Never forget! Secrets!

Awww!!! Thank you!!! Xxxxxx. ILY too! And it has not been six weeks! It's only been 8! oh wait... lol. *hugs!

  8. Sabria's prophecy was so nice and vague :D Perfect. Say what you will about the old bat, but she sure knew showmanship.

Christie is kind of scary. Her as Mariah's mentor? Uh-oh. It's going to be fun watching those two butt heads though! And I wonder if Christie dresses up a bit more when she does readings for clients. I could totally see her dropping that casual hoodie to reveal something super dramatic underneath!

I'm still in awe of your institute. It's so much cooler that that bright red caravan!

The kids looked really cute in their costumes :)

Wait, so Roger thought that Mariah was with Andre all along? Could that be the reason why he's so cold now?

    1. Exactly. Sabria lived for drama. :D

lol. She's supposed to be kind of scary in that cold 'I have no idea what you're thinking' kind of way. Nah. Christie is Christie and she's using her hoodie to hide something right now... ;)

Lol! MoveObjects On and RabbitHole Rugs FTW! The Bright Red Caravan of Prophesy is cute, but Sabria's flair would never have let her be seen as a gypsy. She was a true psychic, to be respected and feared! lol

      Yes! They're so cyoot. <3

Roger is still assuming that Mariah and Andre have continued their relationship, yes. It's been years and he refuses to drop that belief. And that's exactly it. He's still hurt and a little angry and it's clouding his judgement pretty badly.
